Handheld AED

I love seeing how technology and the equipment we use is continually being updated and improved. This is the new AED from Philips, it is a handheld that is slightly bigger than an iphone. You could fit it in a large pocket.

Who remembers how big the defib use to be?

Interesting, considerably smaller than the ones we use at the moment, but would the fact it is smaller mean it has a shorter battery life I wonder?

Code: Select all
Typically 300 shocks or 12 hours of operating time at 77° F (25° C) when configured for monitoring after No Shock Advised (NSA)

7.5 hours of operating time at 77° F (25° C) when configured for CPR after NSA

Sounds pretty similar to other AEDs in terms of battery life. It's about the size of an A5 sheet of paper and 7cm tall which is certainly smaller than anything I've used before.

The size issue is interesting. The smaller the AED the less size capacitor and thus there is a limit on maximum energy delivered. Both Phillips and Defibtech deliver the equivalent current of 150 joules. This might be sufficient for some SCA victims but not all.
I would rather have a larger AED which can deliver a higher current and escalating regime.
